Obituary

'Daphna Iona Richardson was born November 12, 1917 to the late Rev. J.D. and Usley Souders Selvidge and entered her heavenly home on November 29, 2013, reaching the age of ninety-six, being the longest surviving member in her genealogical line.

Iona grew up in the Spann Hill community of Wayne County, Ky where she lived, attended church and grade school. She accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of fourteen and remained a faithful follower throughout her life. She sang in the church choir, taught a ladies Sunday school class and cooked hundreds of Sunday dinners for pastors, visiting evangelists and anyone else who needed a good, hot dinner. Most of the time, she never knew ahead of time just how many she might feed that day but she always made preparation before heading to church. This was in the day prior to restaurants and fast food eateries, especially in that rural setting. She used her cooking skills for twenty three years as she cooked and served meals to many children in two of the Wayne County schools.

Iona's interest in music began as a young girl when she and a childhood friend began playing their guitars and singing in church. Her brother, Will, ran the little country store at Spann and on occasion, if they knew ahead of time that a salesman was expected, they would be asked to come play and sing for them. This gift of song continued when she became the alto voice of the Central Union Quartet, singing unaccompanied the 'Stamps Baxter' style of Southern Gospel music in churches and singing conventions.

On April 10, 1937, she married her childhood sweetheart, Paul Richardson, who preceded her in death on October 10, 1987. They resided in the Spann Hill community most of their married years, later moving to the Steubenville community.

Born to this union were four children: Paulleta Dick, Louisville, Ky., Sharon Worley, and her husband Joe, Fortville, Ind., James Daryl and Roger Dale, who died in infancy.

Also surviving are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Michael Dick, his wife Cathy and daughter, Cally of Edgewood, Ky, Rebecca Dick of Louisville, Ky, Tim Worley, David Worley, his wife, Kelley and their children, Taylor and Zach of Indianapolis, Ind., Beth Engle, her husband, Greg and their children, Noah and Audrey of Greenfield, Ind.

Also surviving are two nephew, Jim and Forrest Selvidge, four nieces, Mary Ina Tuggle, Gladys Burton, Wilma Groce, Betty Lawrence and several great-nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death was her sister, Bertha Bryant, brothers, Will and Ed Selvidge and her son-in-law, Joel Dick.

In 2006, she left her lifetime home of Wayne County to live with her daughter, Paulleta, in Louisville, Ky. She very quickly moved her church membership to the Lakewood Baptist Church and was loved by all who came to know her, many calling her 'Mom.'

She left a great legacy for her family and friends to follow.
