Obituary

'Dora Jane New Dodson departed this life at her home on Kelly Lane, Friday, July 17, 2009 after a long battle with Alzheimer-s Disease. She was born February 21, 1920 to Ewell Smiley and Elisabeth Keith New who lived in the Cedar Hill community of Wayne County.

She married Jesse Jefferson Dodson July 31, 1938 in Livingston, Tennessee and came to the Delta community to live at the James Thomas Lovell place where five children were born.

Surviving is her husband of 71 years; four daughters and one son, Wanda Lee Dodson, Barbara Faye (Bob) Shedd, Rosemary Louise Phillips, Norma Ann (Bob) Turner and Charles Howard (Linda) Dodson.

She has four living grandchildren Lynette Dodson Gregory and her companion Jamie Yowell, Bobbie Michelle Turner, Christopher Jimmy (Denise) Phillips and Delmer Ray (Lori) Turner. One grandson, Jesse Hugh Shedd died in infancy. She has five great grandsons; Jared and Jesse Gregory, McKinley, Isaac and Riley Phillips. She is also survived by her older sister, Lora New Morrow, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brother, Johnnie Green New died July 17, 1990.

A full time homemaker and partner on the family farm she dedicated herself to family and community. She was active in the Steubenville Baptist Church for approximately forty years where she taught Adult Women-s Sunday School Class, assisted with Bible School and social events and served as volunteer janitor for several years. She read the Bible daily and had an uncanny ability to see the innate good and potential in both objects and people. She never tired of telling people, especially youth, about Jesus and God-s love.

She loved to travel and went on many camping trips with her family that took her to 49 states and nine Canadian Provinces. In addition to being the camp cook, she collected rocks wherever she went; she especially liked the ones along shorelines that were worn smooth and round by the timeless tides. Too, she collected bells from travels and kept some in easy reach to ring as needed.
