'Edmund Gayle Smith, age 77 was born in Albany, January 17, 1934 the son of the late James Bryson and Sally Ruby Campbell Smith. He passed away Sunday afternoon, May 20th in Monticello.
On December 16th, 1956 he united in marriage with Barbara Jean Allen Smith who passed away November 3, 2007. To this union two children survive: Vanessa and her husband Ron Dunnington of Monticello and James Allen and his wife Lisa Smith of Albany.
Also surviving are two grandchildren: Brandon and his wife Ashley Dunningon and Laura Ellen Dunnington both of Monticello with several nieces-, nephews other relatives and many friends to mourn his passing.
He is preceded in death by his siblings: Fredrick Smith, Betty Long and Marie Robinson.
After college, Gayle served his country with honor in the Army. Later he joined the family business and became co-owner of the J.B. Smith and Son Hardware and Grocery located downtown Albany until his retirement. He had accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Albany Kentucky where he was instrumental in starting the Trooper Island ministry. He also taught Sunday School in the Youth department for many years and was ordained as a Deacon. Upon retirement he moved to Leesburg Florida where he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Leesburg. After the death of his wife, Barbara he moved to Monticello and made his home with his daughter and united with the Monticello First Baptist Church where he was an active member until his health began to fail.
