Obituary

'George Barton Huffaker of Monticello, Kentucky passed away on August 27, 2011.George, the oldest son of the late Andy and Marie Huffaker of Monticello was born on November 20, 1920 in Cooper, Kentucky and lived for many years on the old home place near Monticello, George, a United States Marine in World War II, fought in several battles in the Pacific including the Battle of Iwo Jima, or -Operation Detachment- of 1945. He watched the famous raising of the flag of the United States of America on Mount Suribachi, upon capturing the island with great cost in American lives. This picture became an iconic image of the 35 day battle. After the war, he earned an AB degree in Chemistry from Baylor University. In the early 1950-s he was a chemist with Union Carbide Nuclear Company and oak Ridge National Laboratory, which was the country-s leading atomic research center. In the late 1950-s he was a senior chemist with Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and later served as a consultant chemist in India for Kaiser Engineer Overseas Corporation, making a feasibility study for a new aluminum facility in India. There he helped set up and operate a new laboratory in Satna, India and trained 25 Indian chemists to work at the laboratory. After returning to the United States he struck out on his own in the exploration and production of oil in Wayne and adjoining counties- and continued these activities until his death. He also loved the mountains, forests and streams and became a prominent land owner in Wayne County.While his interest included tennis and travel around the world as a young man, the study of geological structures, drilling and oil field development as a n adult, his whole life reflected the discipleship of Jesus Christ to those who knew him. He was a deacon and member of the First Baptist Church.He is survived by five brothers and five sisters; Louise Casky, Marguerite Day, Lena David, Raymond, Lewis, Milton, Howard and Fredrick Huffaker, Anita Waldri

p and Jean Wal lis. His parents, Andy and Marie Huffaker and brother David Huffaker preceded him in death. He was loved by his entire family which includes 11 nieces, 15 nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Visitation:
Friday evening form 6 to 8 at the Funeral Home and 9 to 11 Saturday at the Church

11AM Saturday at the First Baptist Church
