'Gladys Ellen Craig Pitman, departed this life on October 12, 2016 at the Hospice Unit of the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Gladys was born on June 2, 1925 in Byrdstown, Tennessee to the late Lucille (Clark) and Ernest Craig. She was the oldest of six children: Frances Turkington, Eugene Craig, James Craig, Jessie Timm and Floyd Craig.
Gladys graduated from Pickett County High School in Byrdstown where she was a outstanding basketball player. She was united in marriage to Earl Lee \u0027Buddy\u0027 Pitman on December 24, 1944 and to this union four children were born.
She is survived by her four children: Sharon Whittenburg (the late Mike) Fuller of Clinton, IN, Larry (Jane/JC) Pitman of Lexington, KY, Stephen (Barbara) Pitman of Mt. Vernon, KY and Holly Miniard (Mike) Whitaker of Somerset, KY and two brothers: James and Floyd Craig.
Also surviving are her grandchildren Scott (Dianna) Whittenburg, Lee (Ashley) Whittenburg, Jason (Beth) Pitman, Scarlet Pitman (Matt) Murphy, Alexandra Miniard, Stephany Pitman, Drew Miniard; step grandchildren: Brian (Brittany) Whitaker and Mary Beth (Scott) Norton; great grandchildren: Eric Whittenburg, Mallory Pitman, Lucie Pitman, Wyatt Pitman, Marlow Murphy; step-great grandchildren: Allie, Grace and Allen Michael Norton along with a host of family and friends who mourn her passing.
Gladys accepted Christ at a young age and was a member of the First Christian Church of Monticello. She worked for the City of Monticello/Water and Sewer Commission as Office Manager and Billing Supervisor until her retirement. She couldn\u0027t stay retired long however and worked at the Monticello Independent School as an aide for six years. She became a volunteer tutor at Wayne County Middle School and later stated that was the most rewarding work she had ever done. Gladys was a charter member of the Wayne County Rescue Squad, very active with American Cancer Society, a member of the Monticello Chapter of the Eastern Star, Hospice volunteer and one of the earliest Girl Scout leaders in Wayne County. She loved working out att he Fitness Center where she had many friends and admirers. Prior to her death, Gladys resided at the Neighborhood Assisted Living Facility in Somerset where she had an extended family and many friends. Her last days were spent in the Jean Waddle Hospice Care Unit at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital where she received outstanding care and compassion.
The funeral service will be 4PM Saturday in the Sanctuary of the First Christian Church with burial following in the Elk Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 Friday and Saturday until 1PM at the Funeral Home and Saturday from 3 to 4 PM at the Church.
