'John William \u0027better known as Johnie\u0027 West was born January 23, 1921 in the Keeton Hollow of the Barrier community of Wayne County, the son of the late John and Bessie Mae Stringer West. He departed this life Wednesday evening at the Jean Waddle Hospice Care unit in Somerset, reaching an age of 94 years.
On May 28, 1945 he united in marriage with Alta Mae Baker West who passed away August 3, 2011. To this union two daughters survive: Bonnie and her husband Kenneth Hardwick and Carolyn and husband Don Gregory.
Also surviving are his grandchildren: John Hardwick, Jill Johnson, Mitchell and Daniel Gregory; great grandchildren: Katelyn and Joseph Hardwick, Tyler Johnson, Landon Reid, Jocee and Lyric Gregory and two sisters: Kathyren England and Vena West.
He is preceded in death by his siblings: Lova Gunter, Clora Baker, Carrie Crumbley, Sue Albertson, Earl, Roy, Neal, Bob, Henry and Fred West.
He served his country with honor as a Corporal in the Military Police of the Army Air Corps during the Second World War. As a young man he accepted Christ as his Savior and was a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church where he served for over 50 years as Sunday School Superintendent and Music Leader.
