Obituary

'Lloyd Thomas Jones was born on March 3, 1921 in the Ritner community as the youngest son of the late Sam and Euna Jones. In his later years, he enjoyed sharing with his family many accounts of the joys and hardships of growing up in Depression and Post-depression years. He would recount fondly the extraordinary effort required just to produce and preserve the food necessary to sustain their large family. He also shared several humorous occasions about attending school and church events.

He passed away peacefully at his home on August 12th, 2014 at the age of 93. Lloyd was the last surviving child of the Sam and Euna Jones family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Euna, four brothers, Wilby, Boyd, Polie, Okra, and five sisters, Verna, Chyle, Ceicle, Lela, and Opal. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Danny Ridner.

On June 5, 1947, Lloyd was united in marriage to Beatrice Keith, who survives. Lloyd and Beatrice were blessed through 67 years of marriage with 8 children, Gene (Rita), James (Dene), Betty Ridner (late Danny Ridner), Larry, Beverly Roberts (Jonathan), Garry (Joyce), Ronnie (Joanna), Randy (Penny), 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was also anticipating the arrival of 2 additional great grandchildren.

With the exception of his army tour of duty, he was a lifelong resident of Wayne County. He proudly served his country during WW II. He entered the US Army in July of 1942 and participated in the 2nd wave of D-Day assaults at Omaha Beach in the invasion of Normandy as a part of the 102nd Infantry Division. He spent 2 and 1/2 years in the service before being wounded in December of 1944 while serving in France. He spent 6 months recuperating in hospitals in France, England, and Scotland before returning to a hospital in the US in May of 1945. He received the following honors for service to his country: EAME Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and Purple Heart.

Lloyd didn't let his army wounds prevent him from public work to support his growing family. He was employed as a night watchman, factory worker and farmer.

He was a well-respected member of his community. His many acts of service to family, friends, and neighbors included transportation to town for groceries, medicine, or even to bring the doctor to the one in need. He was faithful to help in any situation no matter what the time of day or what the weather conditions might have been.

Lloyd made a profession of faith September 13, 1933 and was a member of the Lick Creek Baptist Church. In later years he attended First Turkey Creek Baptist Church as long as his health allowed. Lloyd was blessed with a beautiful bass voice that he used to sing praises to his Lord even singing with the Chuckwagon Gang CD on his way to a doctor visit last Saturday. (Larry was singing, but Lloyd wasn't satisfied with the way it was being done so he sang it for Larry himself!)

Throughout his life he always had an interest and love for nature whether it be fishing, watching and feeding the birds, or hunting. He especially enjoyed the peace and quiet of the mountains and valleys as he walked through them looking for ginseng.

Lloyd, (or daddy and pa-paw as his family fondly remembers him), always looked forward to each Sunday afternoon as they gathered for Sunday dinner around the family table. These gatherings were enjoyed by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as they were all entertained by his sense of humor and quick wit. As goodbyes were said on each visit, Lloyd would always say, 'Come back!'

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him-Children, Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors and friends. However, each of these that know the Lord whom Lloyd served, can find solace in knowing we will be together soon.
