IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Nina Mae
Cowan
August 5, 1937 – January 6, 2026
On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Nina completed her earthly mission and received her wings. Nina was born on August 5, 1937 to the late Obie and Ada Sloan. She was united in marriage to the late George A. Cowan Sr. at the promise of "wearing silk socking everyday" for fifty-six years and together they had nine children.
Nina was a housewife; caring for her family's home, a farmer; often working alongside her husband, and a caregiver; caring not only for her children, but grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other children as well.
In addition, Nina was a banker, often lending money; a landlord, giving people a place to stay; a cook, feeding those who were hungry, a teacher, advising people how to act appropriately; a lender, often allowing people to use household items and tools; not to mention, a role model; actually demonstrating Christ-like behavior.
Nina was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E Church. She was a God-fearing, virtuous woman. She was strong and determined, hardworking and resourceful; as well, generous and respected. Nina enjoyed growing and working in her flowers. Also, Nina often told her children and grandchildren to "be pretty" when acting out, which as we know, could be often, isn't that right Mitchell (as they say Mama tried).
Nina was proceeded in death by her parents; her husband; four children (Mildred Coffey, Hazel Cowan, George A. Cowan Jr. "Buddy", Evana Jo Cowan); three siblings (Kenneth Sloan, William Sloan, Minnie Stigall); one grandchild James Perkins and two sons-in-law (David Perkins "Chan", Jeffrey Waddle "Pookie")
Nina is survived by her children; Frances(Kay) Allen, Alice Perkins, Phyllis(Jeff) Grinstead, Mitchell (Kelly) Cowan and Ada Waddle; grandchildren; Deanna(Cavin) Patton, Crystal Berry, W.K. Allen, Kayla Allen, Jakale Cowan, A'Kedra Law; five great-grandchildren, two sisters (Mary Ann Venable, Jo Sloan), five brothers (Johnny, Wayne, James(Lorene), Terry and Andy(Duchess) Sloan); sister-in-law, Shirley Cowan; as well as host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Smooches Mother, we will miss you and our daily phone calls...until we meet again.
