Samuel Levi Phillips passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, June 17, 2023.
He was born October 20,1942 to the late Claude and Vina Phillips in the Freedom area of Wayne County, Kentucky. He married Genive Keith on August 21,1966 at Lower Turkey Creek Church and she preceded him in death on January 24, 2010. They resided in McCordsville, Indiana until he retired from General Motors and moved to their retirement home he built in 1999. To this union two daughters survive, Stephanie (Jay) of Pendleton, Indiana and Claudia (Sam) of Fortville, Indiana.
He is also survived by three granddaughters; Jessica and Emily Jones, and Lindsey Pope, his brothers Danny Phillips of Monticello, Kentucky, Raymond Phillips of Sidney, Ohio, sisters; Attlean Kennedy of Monticello, Kentucky, Evalee Branscum of Sidney, Ohio, and Helen Coffey of Whitley City, Kentucky, as well and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his spouse, parents, brothers; Hobart, Allen, Dewey, and Obie Phillips, his sister; Phyllis Martin, and great aunt Dovie Phillips.
Samuel had accepted Christ as his Savior as a young child at Freedom Baptist Church and was a member of the Lower Turkey Creek Baptist Church at his passing. He was a veteran of the US Army where he served in 1964-1966 and was stationed in Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Germany, and was Private First Class. He earned Expert Marksmanship, Army Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Award. He also achieved the Kentucky Colonel honor from the Governor of Kentucky in 2011. He was also a member of the Monticello Masonic Lodge # 431, the Wayne County Sportsman Club, and the NRA.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 20th, from 4PM until 8PM in the funeral home chapel with a Masonic service held at 6PM. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 21 at 11AM at the Lower Turkey Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Isaac Tucker Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Lower Turkey Creek Baptist Church Building Fund C/O Boyce New 91 Fanny Hollow Road, Monticello, Ky 42633 or the Foster Clark Cemetery C/O First Southern National Bank PO Box 489 Monticello, Ky 42633.
