At age 8, he moved with his family and later lived across the Cumberland River at Grape, KY. 'Old Man River' proved to be a chore for Wendell and his siblings to get across to school, but it just kept on rolling along. In 1946, upon receiving honorable discharge from the US Army, he returned to the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Winnie Katherine Gover on December 20th, 1950, a marriage of almost 64 years. After their marriage, Wendell and Winnie lived at Touristville, KY later named 'Mystic View' near beautiful Lake Cumberland where he lived and farmed until he retired in recent years to enjoy his passion of fishing and watching his son do the farm work. To this union was born two children, Patricia Ann and husband Dan Richardson who lives next door, and Samuel Wendell and wife Lula Jean Burton who lives in Somerset, KY.

He is survived by his wife, Winnie, his children and five grandchildren, Wyndee, Stuart and Stephen Richardson and Allison and Logan Burton.
